At the end of 2019 I had a baby daughter. I’ve long been aware of the fact that there are fewer female characters in kids’ books. But the unjust reality of that really hit home when I started to read to her. Of course this is true of all books, movies, news articles etc. etc., and is very nicely described in Invisible Women – Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez, an excellent book I highly recommend.
Here’s a list of books I’ve found with strong and/or realistic female characters. Please get in touch if there are others you think I should add here.
- The Gruffalo’s Child by Julia Donaldson
- I Need a Hug by Aaron Blabey
